Description

Read the true story of Susannah Spurgeon, the wife of British pastor Charles Spurgeon.

Susannah was married to a very gifted and busy preacher, who could not have done all he did without her support. Susie experienced poor health for much of her life, but she did not let that stop her from serving. One key way that she served the wider church was by creating the Book Fund, which gave free copies of Charles' books to poor pastors who could not afford to buy them.

This beautifully illustrated children's biography of Susannah Spurgeon (1832-1903) features stylish illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos. It is part of a series designed to show kids that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Download free extras, such as worksheets, to help children interact with the true story and think of ways in which they can also follow God and encourage his people today.

These stories can be read to young children or enjoyed independently by early readers. The free extras make these stories useful for Sunday school, missions events and more.

In every age and of every age, followers of Christ are spiritually enriched by studying the lives of great Christians of church history. As a father of five, I personally know the benefits of planting those seeds as early as possible. That’s why I’m delighted to see Mary Mohler produce this children’s book, Susannah Spurgeon: The Pastor’s Wife Who Didn’t Let Sickness Stop Her. Susannah Spurgeon’s story is a great one to tell, and Mary Mohler is a great author to tell it. I heartily recommend this book to parents and pastors, as well as churches and children’s’ ministries.

I love this book for many reasons. I love kids getting to know not only about Charles Spurgeon, but that God gave him a wife that helped him have such a fruitful ministry. That is such a great role model for our girls as future wives and mothers. But also, as a pastor’s wife, who has daily health struggles like Susannah Spurgeon, I love that this book highlights how God does great things even in those who struggle with much weakness. It's personally been how God has testified to His greatness in my life. And I love for kids to see that God does not just use the powerful and the very able, but he delights to be glorified in the very weak who he gives grace to do the many good works he even has prepared them. There is no one who God saves that he does not use. And sometimes in ways far more than they could ever imagine.

Susannah Spurgeon is a wonderful example for young girls to aspire to. In her book, Mary captures Susannah's spirit of love, devotion, and determination to use her life for good, even when life is hard.

“Inspiring Story”

This new installment in the Do Great Things for God series features Susannah Spurgeon, the wife of the famous pastor Charles Spurgeon. This picture book biography highlights her personal story, showing how she came to know the Lord through her future husband's witness, supported him throughout his preaching career, and persevered through health challenges to continue serving God in whatever way she could. The simple text from Mary Mohler explains Susannah's story in a way that children can understand, highlighting key lessons from her life and giving a quick sense of the time and place where the Spurgeons lived. The illustrations from Cecilia Messina also include historically accurate details.

At the end, the book includes a historic photograph of Susannah Spurgeon, and there is also a page of discussion questions, a timeline, and a map. The book also makes adults aware of the free activity sheets for kids that they can download from the publisher's website. However, even though the timeline and one of the activity pages mentions that Susannah wrote three devotional books, the biography itself doesn't mention her work as a published author, just her letter-writing and charitable endeavors. I wish that the author had directly mentioned Susannah's books in the biography, especially since not everyone will reference the material in the back.

This is a great educational resource for families, churches, and Christian schools. It shares historical information and an inspiring true story, and it gives a relatively thorough sense of this woman's life while still being simple for young readers. This will appeal to kids who are old enough to read the book independently, and parents can also read it aloud to younger children. This is a great book to teach kids about a notable woman in church history, and it will be especially meaningful to families who also deal with health challenges.

Note: I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Wonderful and inspiring book!”

This picture book is the newest book in the Do Great Things For God series. These books are great for introducing young children to church history. I absolutely love this book on Susie Spurgeon, Charles Spurgeon's wife. These books focus on women who God has used to further His kingdom. I love this so much because this gives young girls the chance to read about these women who God has used and inspire them as well and see how God can use anyone he chooses to build his church and bring Him glory.

I actually read Susie's biography recently and loved reading this after having read her biography. It is really well done. This picture book shows children Susie's dependence on God in the midst of illness and how she didn't let her illness keep her from finding ways to encourage and help others. She knew her times were in God's hands. She set up an amazing book fund for poor pastor's that was able to give over 200,000 books to pastor's in need! She was married to the famous pastor, Charles Spurgeon, and was a great help and encouragement to him in her role as pastor's wife. The pictures in this book are beautiful and I love the discussion questions at the end. There are even some printable worksheets at the end of the book. Such a wonderful book to add to your children's library!

“Faithful Servant”

Susannah “Susie” Spurgeon was the wife of famous preacher Charles Spurgeon. I never heard much about Susie before reading this book with my daughter.

Susie was a woman plagued by sickness and often had to be away from her husband as he traveled. However Susie didn’t let sickness or separation keep her from serving the Lord and being a true and faithful helpmate to her husband. Susie started a book drive to get the message of the gospel out and helped raise money when their church almost burnt down. She truly had a heart for making sure people knew about Christ.

What I truly love about this series is that I’m getting to introduce my daughter to women who not only do amazing things here on earth but they do amazing things that impact eternity! Susie is a great example of how life may not be ideal but we can always turn and praise the Lord through our trials. Im very excited to collect this series and read them to my kids.

Thank you so much to the @thegoodbookcompanyusa for providing me with this book for my honest review.

“Inspiring!”

Our family loves this series, and is so encouraged by these stories of faithful followers of Jesus! Susannah's story greatly inspires us as we read about how she sought to serve the Lord whatever her circumstances, and how He was faithful to her.

This series has been a wonderful way to introduce my young children to examples from history of believers who walked in faith and obedience, and I am glad to be able to introduce them to Susannah's story with them through this book.

“wonderful!”

The Good Book Company has so many wonderful series for children and this one is a great example. The Do Great Things For God series highlights women who loved the Lord and lived for the Gospel. What a wonderful way for young kids to learn the realities of living a life for Christ from others who came before them.

These books are a huge encouragement and inspiration to children aspiring to be one of God's Gospel workers.

I particularly enjoyed the illustrations in this book. They were engaging and captivating for child and adult.

Susannah's story is simple yet powerful. She showed perseverance, determination, and a firm foundation in Christ.

Like the other books in the series, Mohler includes several additional resources at the end of the book.

- Real picture of Susannah Spurgeon and a scripture reference

- Reflection questions regarding her life story

- A visual timeline of the important events in her life

- A world map of Susannah's life

- Website with interactive resources

I love that each story is unique and displays the power and work of God in our lives very differently. We are not meant to do and be exactly as someone else. Rather God will use us the way He sees fit with the abilities and capacity he has given us.

I love this series and hope they continue to write more!

“Another favorite from one of our most favorite series!”

We love the The Good Book Company and know that any book that we receive from their Do Great Things for God series will become an instant favorite, as did this one! We just read this story today and loved it! And as a Chrisitan homeschool mama, I especially appreciated the Questions to Think About section at the end that allowed for us to have some thoughtful discussion about how we too can serve others and glorify God.

“An excellent introduction to a great woman of faith!”

Another winner from the "Do Great Things for God" series!

This book introduces children to Susie Spurgeon who was married to the famous preacher, Charles Spurgeon. Despite struggling with poor health, she still served the Lord and trusted God knowing that "My times are in your hand." (Psalm 31:15) The Lord inspired Susie to start a book fund to help poor pastors buy books that were written by Charles. They sent around 200,000 books! I loved this part of Susie's story, because even though she suffered with poor health, she was faithful and found ways to serve God from her sick bed.

This book is so well done and is very engaging for children. The illustrations are colorful and fun. Difficult topics like illness are handled well in this series! My girls ask for this one on repeat! These books are perfect for family discipleship or homeschooling activities.

“Faithfulness in the Ordinary”

We love this series! This is the most recent one we added to our collection and it is just as good as the others. Love how it is Susannah's faithfulness to the Lord that makes her testimony great. She lived a simple life as a wife and mother and spent the second half of her life essentially bedridden. But she was faithful in her every day - not letting her sickness keep her from following the Lord! I always love the additional information at the end to enhance the biography for older kids who want to go deeper!

“A Great Christian Biography for Kids”

I picked this biography to use with my son when we homeschool. I had heard of Charles Spurgeon, but I didn't know anything about his wife. I enjoyed learning how she became a Christian, a stay at home mom, a pastor's wife, and a ministry starter. Her faith and encouraging spirit were inspiring to hear about.
I also really like how this book has additional educational resources like the timeline and reading questions in the back.
