“Great to jumpstart a mentorship program”
Our church is starting a mentorship program this fall, and one of the ways we’re helping women prepare is by walking through why Christian community is important, what it looks like, and how they can actively be part of it.
A Church That Cares by Helen Thorne-Allenson has been the perfect resource for accomplishing all of the above. I originally picked up this book as part of a book review program, but I now plan to use it with our women on Wednesday nights. Here’s why:
The chapters are short, concise, and easy to read and understand (about 15–20 minutes each).
It clearly explains the topic while also giving tangible, relatable examples. I especially loved the different church member examples in Chapter 3 — I saw myself in a few of them.
Scripture is the backbone of the book. Ephesians, especially Chapter 4, is referenced throughout, and the author gives practical guidance on using the book of Ephesians to equip your congregation to care for one another.
The book is written for both church members and church leaders. A few chapters focus more on planning and execution for ministry leaders or administrators, but the average church member will still gain so much from it.
It includes discussion questions and practical outlines for establishing a “church that cares” ministry or program.
It gives an extremely practical breakdown of why people are the way they are and how we can better love and meet them where they are.
I’m excited to go through this book with our women, and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for tools to help your church grow in intentional community, communication, and caring for others well.
Wow, this is such a great application for this book! Thanks so much for leaving this review, Laura. We hope the women in your church find it to be helpful and practical too!
