We want our kids to see that the Old Testament points to Christ. In her marvelous Jesus Moments series, Alison Mitchell helps children seek-and-find the Old Testament connection to Jesus in fun ways they'll be sure to remember!

What a clever series! By using symbols that children must find and explore, these books draw out significant links between Old Testament characters and Jesus. Perfect for parents and teachers who want to help their children understand God’s Big Story.

Writer in Residence, Tyndale House, Cambridge.

Jesus showed his followers in all the Old Testament “the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27). The Old Testament comes into clear focus when we begin to see these wonderful things. Alison Mitchell draws children into this rich true way of reading the Old Testament. The books are fresh, lively, attractive, intriguing, and thought-provoking. Warmly recommended.

“Shows how the story of David points to Jesus!”

If you want a good book to introduce your children to the story of David, this is a great picture book. It is so much more than what I heard as a young child. This is a great book to read along with the Bible to learn about David and to show kids ages 4-7 how David was a foreshadowing of Jesus.

I love how it is also interactive, having children look for hidden crowns throughout the book that point to a parallel to Jesus. I can already tell this is going to be a fun one to read as my children get older. I am excited to see that this is one of more books to come, showing children Christ in the Old Testament!

When I was a young child, I had such a hard time understanding the Old Testament and some of the strange stories, especially because I was told to read it with me as the center of the story. "Be like David and conquer your fears...". Or "have more faith." While there is definitely application to our lives from the stories of the Bible, we have to read it in context and with God as the center of the story instead of me. What is this story telling us about God? That is what I appreciated about this picture book. It helps children to learn about David and show how Christ is a fulfillment of God's promises. It shows children Christ in the Old Testament and helps them see the big picture of the story of David. I definitely recommend this wonderful picture!

Thank you @thegoodbookcompanyusa for a copy of this book for my honest thoughts!

“How David Points to Jesus”

It's hard to summarize the entirety of David's story & how he points to Jesus. It's even harder to do so in a way that is accessible to kids. This book does a great job of both!

“Engaging!”

This book illustrates how the tale of David points to Jesus. With a clever seek-and-find element involving four hidden crowns, the book captures the interest of elementary-aged kids. The retelling of David's story is engaging and accurate, complemented by attention-grabbing illustrations. Overall, it's a wonderful exploration of biblical narratives for young readers.

“Good resource to introduce the life of David and finding Jesus in the OT”

God said, "I don't look at the outside - at how strong or handsome someone is, I look at the inside. I see their heart - whether or not they love me and want to live for me."

This book features a brief look into David's life from being a young shepherd boy, anointed as God's king, defeating Goliath, fleeing Saul, showing mercy to Saul in the cave, and God's promise that one day the promised king would come from the line of David.

Crowns are hidden in the illustrations to note a "Jesus moment" - when David is a little bit like Jesus. The beginning and the end of the book read more like a lesson vs a storybook. I was not a fan of the illustrations.

“Story Points to Jesus”

A great interactive story for my 5 and 7 year old. We enjoyed this book together and we loved seeing how the Bible story points to Jesus. I loved how the story was a little more for older children.

“Unique Bible Story Retelling”

This unique Old Testament storybook shares snapshots from David's early life and then connects aspects of David's story to Jesus. At the beginning of the book, the author explains that if you look closely, you can see parallels to Jesus in different Old Testament stories. She encourages kids to look for hidden crowns in the illustrations, because these each signal a "Jesus moment." There are four crowns hidden in Noah Warnes's detailed illustrations, and they are surprisingly well-hidden. The target audience of elementary-aged kids will enjoy this seek-and-find element.

Throughout this book, Allison Mitchell summarizes some elements of David's story, up to him becoming King of Israel. She writes in an engaging, conversational style that also includes interactive questions. The illustrations from Noah Warnes help tell the story and convey dramatic moments, but I felt that some of them were a little too dark and monochrome. I also wish that Mitchell had directly explained that Jesus came from the lineage of David. She connects Jesus to a promise that God gave David, but it isn't clear in the text that Jesus was a direct descendant from this king.

This is the first book in a new series that teaches kids about how Old Testament stories point to Jesus. I think that there is room for improvement, especially since the pages with low-contrast illustrations won't be as easy for kids to see when someone is reading this out loud to a whole group, but I enjoyed this as a whole. I would recommend this to Christian families and churches, and I look forward to future books in this series.

Note: I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Good but wanted more”

This is a pretty good retelling of the story of David in a picture book format. It is engaging and accurate. I love the concept presented at the start of the book to look for Jesus Moments in the story ( as we know that Jesus was always part of God's big story and therefor can be seen in the OT). I do wish there was a page or 2 more on David's life when he was king (nearly all of it is before he became King) and I wish that there was more written about Jesus being in the lineage of David (I didn't feel like that was explained at all.) Overall, an engaging and truthful picture book to read out loud with your kids.

“Points to Jesus”

A beautiful, colorful storybook from the Jesus Moments collection for young children. Loved the colors that grabbed my attention and the dialogue that points to Jesus. Interactive questions and activity to keep the young mind engaged and pointing back to Jesus. Definitely a book to be used with a parent and a child.
