Description

Read the true story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a Civil Rights activist who courageously stood up for the vulnerable and contended for the rights of unborn children.

Living in Mississippi, "Mother Hamer" left school at six and was subjected to the racist "Jim Crow" laws. She and her friends marched for the right to vote and became known as "the Freedom Fighters." Fannie was imprisoned and beaten but eventually was able to speak to the Houses of Congress in Washington, D.C. Having won the vote, Mother Hamer helped bring people out of poverty and stood up for the right of unborn children to be born and to be loved.

This beautifully illustrated children's biography of Fannie Lou Hamer (1917-1977) features engaging illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos. It is part of a series called Do Great Things For God, which is designed to show kids that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Download free extras, such as worksheets, to help children interact with the true story and think of ways in which they can also follow God and encourage his people today.

These stories can be read to young children or enjoyed independently by early readers. The free extras make these stories useful for Sunday school, missions events and more.

“Fannie Lou Hamer’s story needs to be told and I can think of no one better than K. A. Ellis to tell it. In this beautiful biography, we see how the gospel compelled this remarkable woman to share the good news of Jesus, pray for her enemies, and combat the injustice around her. May her story inspire us to do the same!”

Justin E. Giboney

President, the AND Campaign

“As a father of three, I know it’s important to provide children with clear examples of how Christian convictions drive believers toward redemptive work. K.A. Ellis beautifully illustrates how a deep faith in Christ inspired Hamer’s vision, courage, and perseverance.”

John Ensor

President of PassionLife

“You never know what’s in a person till they are bumped and you see what spills out. Fannie Lou got bumped hard and often. What spilled out was a song of praise for God, courage to expose injustice and rescue the weak, practical help for her neighbors, and grace for even people who hurt her. Let’s follow Fannie Lou.”

“Powerful and Inspiring”

As with all books that we have read from The Do Great Things for God series, we loved it!

This is a beautifully illustrated biography of Fannie Lou Hamer and one that will inspire both children and adults.

And with discussions questions, a biographical timeline, and extra resources to engage children, this is a wonderful resource for children’s ministry and families who homeschool.

Thank you, The Good Book Company, for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

“Very good”

Fannie Lou Hamer is an example that we can use from history to our children. Fannie loved God and bore witness to that through the Bible verses she quoted, the songs she sang, and the way she lived her life.

Despite others' cruelty towards her and dealing with punishment from those who hated her and her beliefs, Fannie didn't let any of that stop her.

She boldly spoke out in front of government officials, spoke in Washington D.C., and
she stood firmly for her beliefs and God's values.

I would highly recommend this book to any Christian family and any homeschooling family that is interested in reading about historical people of faith.

Also, this book would be a great asset to any church library and/or Sunday school or children's church classroom.

“Another great book in this series!”

I love this series and continue to recommend it to others, especially homeschool moms who may want to incorporate a unit of studying historical women who have 'done great things for God.'

My daughter especially seemed to be moved by Fannie Lou Hamer's story and asked if we could pray for her after we read it.

Some of these books talk about some heavy things, but I think they do a great job of portraying them in a way that the kids can understand without making them confused or afraid.

This book is a great reminder to my kids to shine a light in the darkness!

“Amazing”

Amazing. Fannie spent her whole life advocating, protecting, and providing for the lives of others. Her faith and passion shines through her testimony. She never stopped seeking the good of those around her and is an incredible role model to look up to. As a homeschooling mama, I LOVE the additional information at the end to go deeper with each biography in the Do Great Things for God series! I'm learning so much too through these story books!

“A Fantastic Addition to the Series”

This is a fantastic series of books, teaching us about big characters in Christian history and how they lived faithful lives for God. Fannie Lou Hamer is an inspiring example of what it looks like to stand up for the rights of those who are discriminated against, and for those who have no voice for themselves. The story is succinct but powerful, and the addition of a timeline at the end is great for grounding a child's knowledge of the story in reality. Another book I need to buy for a friend of mine's children until they have the whole series!

“Another amazing book! Love it for our homeschool library!”

This is another wonderful addition to the “Do Great Things for God” series. We enjoy these short picture books as a way to learn about missionaries.

This series always has beautiful illustrations and this one is no exception. They take a story and make it accessible for children with an emphasis on how God works in their lives. Each book includes a real life photo and timeline of the missionary which is ever so helpful. This book also includes questions at the end and additional free resources for interacting with Helen’s story. The homeschool mom in me loves these mini lessons!

An inspiring and fun way to teach biographies to our youngsters.

“A Lovely Tribute”

I received Fannie Lou Hamer compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.

Fannie Lou Hamer by K.A. Ellis is the latest release in the Do Great Things for God series by The Good Book Company. This book details the life of Fannie Lou who made great strides in the civil rights movement in the United States. As a child, Fannie had to stop going to school to help provide for her family. Fannie had a dream of laws being passed that would allow her and many others to do things they weren’t able to due to the color of their skin.

This book details how Fannie fought for freedom along with her friends who were deemed Freedom Fighters. She lived a life of faithful perseverance that included very painful persecution. Even so, her life was one with an incredible impact. Fannie Lou Hamer is a great resource for helping little ones understand what godly perseverance looks like and is a helpful intro to the civil rights movement in America. The illustrations are vibrant and stunning and there are companion worksheets that parents, guardians, and educators can download for free to prompt further discussion about the book.

To enhance the book’s reading, I highly recommend listening to Fannie’s album The Songs My Mother Taught Me on Spotify. I enjoyed Fannie Lou Hamer and highly recommend it and can’t wait to read more from K.A. Ellis and more in Do Great Things for God series!

“Encouraging and empowering story - Love this series!”

These biographical picture books from the "Do great Things For God" series (for children ages 4-7) are one of our family favourites. The stories give details about the Christian's life without being too heavy for little ones to hear. I also appreciated how each story ended with a Bible verse, which we learn and memorise together. We also love the free educational resources on the @thegoodbookau website to help us think more about the people and countries.

Fannie's story in particular reminded us to treat everyone with respect and dignity, and challenged us to consider how we not only endure hard times but rise up to bring change.

I received a copy of this book from The Good Book Company in exchange for an honest review.
