Description

Everywhere women face choices — home or career, money or relationships, ‘secure’ marriage or ‘free’ singleness, using your looks to get on or ignoring your looks and getting ignored, competing with the boys or retreating into the sisterhood ghetto, the ‘progress’ of feminism or the ‘nostalgia’ of motherhood and apple-pie, women bishops or tea-ladies and baby-sitters?

Our culture has plenty to say on all these issues. But a Christian woman, seeking to live for her Lord, will first of all want to find out God’s design, purposes and promises for women.

And here’s the book to help. Sarah Collins (nee Young), in this set of nine Bible studies, aims to answer questions such as:
- What does the Bible say about the ‘big issues’ facing women today?
- How should this affect my own life?
- How can I be helped to live like this in a society with a very different agenda?

Some things will be controversial in our culture, even in some of our churches. This course doesn’t set out to be politically correct but faithful to Scripture.

Suitable for groups or individuals, this guide covers all the major Bible teaching specific to women. Set within the big picture of God’s redemption of sinners through Jesus Christ, the heart-felt aim is that 21st century women will be enabled to live obediently and joyfully for Christ, as women after his own heart.

This edition has been revised and updated with a new study—women and their children.

Other information

The Good Book Guides have been developed to ensure that each session not only seeks to uncover the meaning of the passage and see how it fits into the big picture of the Bible, but also leads people to apply what they have learnt to their lives. Flexible and practical, the Good Book Guides are ideal for small groups, or individual study.

"The format is very user-friendly and the content is rich and accessible."
- Justin Taylor, Gospel Coalition blogger and Vice-President of Editorial, Crossway

"God-centered, application-oriented, and driven by the text throughout, this resource is a gift to God’s church."
- Matt Smethurst, Gospel Coalition reviewer and Master of Divinity student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Here at Covenant Life Church, we have greatly benefitted from the small group resources from The Good Book Company. Many small groups in our family life ministry have used "Colossians: Confident Christianity" in their study of scripture. Additionally, our youth ministry has used "Romans 1-5: God and You" in their small groups. Both resources were very easy to use, helped the reader engage directly with the scriptures, and had a wonderful pastoral emphasis demonstrated in all the questions.
- Dave Brewer, Youth Pastor at Covenant Life Church, Maryland

“Challenging and Inspiring”

As with all these books, a very Biblical, helpful series of studies which encourage you to apply practically what you have learned and to grow in your intimacy with God. In each one I was able to see how God had been speaking to me through the study and have been inspired towards greater discipleship. A wide range of topics, all applying to Christian women, and all giving a true Biblical perspective and correcting any wrong western 21st century attitudes of our own to the areas under discussion. A very valuable resource, as I find all these Good Book guides generally are. We are blessed by the Christian resources we have available to us in this country

“more of the author's opinion than scripture”

This study guide is at best misguided and at worst dangerous. The author's opinions seem to hold more sway than the authority of scripture (a personal favourite was when Deborah being a judge was 'argued away'). Sets up from the start a hierarchy where all men are placed over all women - without making any distinctions of Marriage or church leadership. Was personally surprised it didn't end up telling us all that women can't be police officers, or mailmen as John Piper likes to argue. Can someone write a resource looking at how God uses women throughout scripture for his redemptive purposes instead of using something like this which attempts to shoehorn scripture into 1950s stereotypes of how women should behave.

Thanks for your feedback. As a publisher we take a complementarian approach to the relationship between men and women, because we think that’s what the Bible teaches - but having said that, we do appreciate that there are a range of views within the complementarian position, and this Good Book Guide adopts one such view. I think it’s unfair, though, to say that the author’s opinions hold more sway than Scripture - she is seeking to base those opinions on Scripture, though of course you may feel that she takes a position on the complementarian spectrum that doesn’t fit the biblical evidence as well as a different position does. Readers looking for a resource that celebrates the way God has used women in his redemptive purposes in the way you describe could try the Women of Faith and Meeting Jesus Good Book Guides. You might also find Kathleen Nielson’s book Women and God interesting.

“Faithfully draws answers from the Bible”

After having attended sessions on this lead by the author, I have used this book to lead student girl's groups in the UK, one to ones, and a women's ministry group in Singapore. It faithfully looks to God's word to address our role in creation, the effects of of the fall and then each of the situations and relationships women are in. (Women in the workplace would be a helpful addition for the the next edition!) It presents a faithful guide through God's complementation design getting answers from the Bible text itself. The written sections among the questions are very clear and helpful in elucidating tricky areas. The leader's notes at the back draw out areas to be sensitive to, provide helpful suggestions in launching issues and getting people talking as well as theological clarifications.

“Encouraging and Practical”

Thank you so much for this book. Our bible study group of 4 mums found it incredibly encouraging and practical. As a leader, I found the optional 'explore more' bits very helpful in knowing which bits to skip through when times was limited.

“Excellent ”

I have used this study book with two different ladies groups at church and both have gone well. The material is biblical and affirms the complementary differences between men and women as set out by the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. The groups found the course material challenging and the topics stimulated plenty of lively discussion. The discussion questions are good and the the Leaders Guide at the back of the book is excellent.
There is just one slightly negative comment - I had a number of women attending the groups who were married to unbelievers and I did not feel that this sensitive issue was adequately addressed. So for this reason I did two sessions on 'Women and Marriage' (Chapter 3) the first covering Christian marriages and the second a more in-depth study of 1 Peter 3 v 1-7, looking at the challenges and opportunities of being married to an unbeliever. I think Biblical Womanhood is such an important subject for today's society and this book is a good starting point. Highly recommended. Thanks!

“Relevant to all cultural settings. ”

I have used this study three times with women in London, Wales and the USA. In each setting it helpfully led us through the scripture passages and brought out the principles, which were always the same. The application of the biblical principles differed in the different countries and it was exciting to see how scripture speaks to all people regardless of race or culture. These studies are a helpful tool in teaching the principles of biblical womanhood regardless of the life situations of the women concerned. I would highly recommend them.

“Highly recommended for any woman who wants to honour the Lord ”

(Review written for 'Biblical Womanhood')

These studies have helped our Mums' Bible study group be clear on what the Bible says about how women can best serve the Lord, love their husbands and love their children. The studies have facilitated lots of discussion and lives have been changed as the Spirit has been at work. Thank you for clear, biblical teaching that helps us live wisely according to God's ways in spite of the culture around us!

“Superb resource for women of all ages”

(Review written for 'Biblical Womanhood')

I bought several copies of this book to do a home study with a group of women from my Church. We have found them to be a great tool to encourage conversation and so far, we have not managed to get through the first session, having met twice.

If you were disciplined, I'm sure they would be valuable too, but we have decided to promote the natural flow of conversation that the book allows and have been encouraged tremendously by the joy of sharing with each other.

Can easily recommend this book to anyone desiring to learn more about the real biblical position of women in today's world.

“Very Helpful”

(Review written for 'Biblical Womanhood')

A useful Bible study aid for our small group of women. It is possible for any of the group to use this book to lead a study. The questions are well centred on what scripture says and do not ask us to say how we "feel" too often! The list of other books to read was a helpful support too. Thank you.
