About this book

How can you live your best life, be your best self, achieve your goals and make a lasting difference? There’s lots of advice out there, but does any of it work?

In this book, she examines some of the ways in which our culture tells us to pursue happiness, power, identity and love, and shows us how only God’s grace provides what we truly need ...

Endorsements

Truth and grace mark the ministry of our Lord, and they also mark Tieler’s perceptive book on ditching the endlessly exhausting pursuit of self-help. Full of insight into the human heart, How to Ditch the How-to will expose your need—and Christ’s perfect, abundant grace.

Kristen Wetherell Author, Hope When It Hurts, Humble Moms, and the For the Bible Tells Me So board book series

With precision and skill, Tieler Giles identifies why self-help promises much but delivers little, and points us instead to the person of Christ in whom all things are done, not to-do. I appreciated her wealth of experience as a life coach; the acknowledgement of where self-help can have value; her honesty and her witty observations. This book is joyful, real, comprehensive and practical. Don’t just put it on your to-do list—read it!

Linda Allcock Author, Deeper Still

All of us want to improve and grow, and the world offers no shortage of answers and products to try. Tieler Giles embarked on a journey to try ‘self-help’ and came up wanting. But in the process, she learned about herself, and more importantly about her relationship with her Savior. This book is the fruit of that journey, and it’s one that will serve anyone who has believed that self-help books and tactics are the answer to their needs. Giles has been in your shoes, and she is a friend who invites you back to God’s purposes for you.

3.5 stars, rounded up.

In this book, Tieler Giles encourages people to consider the wisdom that the Bible offers for life, in contrast to self-help principles that lack the same understanding of human nature, and which cannot offer true grace, salvation, or Spirit-empowered paths towards life change. Giles explains a Christian view of the world, shares personal anecdotes, and compares and contrasts typical self-help principles with teachings from the Bible. She also concludes each chapter with some paradigm shifts or ...

(Review written for 'How to Ditch the How-to')

This book discusses Giles journey of self-help and self-improvement methods that are popularly used within Western culture. Within her journey she realized that through each different strategy that she was using, she wasn’t finding the fulfillment, happiness, improvement or overall finding what she was hoping to within that season.
She then contrasts the message she was understanding from the self-help method with what the Bible has to say and overall the difference that was able to make in her life. Giles uses Biblical truth to help the reader understanding their identify in Christ and what that means related to their ...

As someone who has jumped on the self-help wagon numerous times and still struggles to accept God’s grace, I found Giles’ both theologically and practically encouraging.

Giles shares openly of her search for self-help, even after coming to Christ. She is transparent in the ways she leaned on self-sufficiency rather than Christ’s work on the cross. With a conversational tone, Giles shares timeless truth in a friendly, yet, thought provoking way.
