Being long-time fans of the Tales that Tell the Truth series, we were looking forward to Catalina’s illustrations for this storybook Bible and they did not disappoint! They are detailed and captivating, robust and powerful, and appropriate for children while still being interesting to adults.
This storybook Bible traces the King and His kingdom throughout the stories in the Bible. Each story is captured on a 2 page spread, with an occasional 4 pages needed, and includes the title as ...well as the Scripture it’s based on. I appreciate the details of the contents pages at the beginning, the ribbon bookmark, and the “what’s next” at the end.
We meet the King on page 1 much like we do in Genesis 1. I love how the author so beautifully captured the emphasis of God’s sovereignty and His plan for redemption being highlighted throughout this book. Helping children to grasp the magnitude of God’s redemptive story is not an easy thing, but this storybook Bible does it beautifully.
I appreciate the simplicity of this storybook Bible with its stories and illustrations. There are no prayer prompts or discussion questions - just the beauty of the King and His Kingdom laid out on every page expressed in lovely words and dramatic illustrations.

This is the second Bible storybook that I have reviewed from The Good Book Company. I wondered what would make this one distinct from the "God’s Big Promises Bible Storybook," and they are different in multiple ways. The art style in "The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible" is much less cartoon-style and uses more muted tones, and the stories are longer and more involved. Author ...Bob Hartman covers additional content and uses more sophisticated vocabulary, and also includes some tough details that people often gloss over with children.
This book goes through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The stories lead up to the reveal of King Jesus, and then show how Jesus fulfills God’s promises. The storybook selections include specific narratives from the Bible, and also include summaries that help explain other parts of Scripture. For example, the reading about Isaiah explains what that book is about, gives some context for the time period, and shows how Isaiah's prophecies point forward to Jesus. I appreciate how Hartman curated a blend of well-known stories, lesser-known moments from biblical history, and summaries of less narrative-focused Bible books.
"The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible" will appeal to Christian families who are looking for a Bible storybook that is faithful to Scripture, takes kids seriously, and gives kids a strong sense of the gospel story. This makes a great family read-aloud, and many parents will find it eye-opening and encouraging for them, too. I really enjoyed this book as an adult reader, and it made me love Jesus even more. And that is the strongest endorsement I can give!

I love this Bible! It’s written for younger children (I’d say ages 3 and up, though older kids could read it independently), yet the text is meaningful enough for the whole family to enjoy. With 70 stories spanning from Creation to Revelation, it makes a perfect bedtime read or family devotional.
Flipping through it, I was delighted to find that it includes several lesser known stories rather than focusing only on the most familiar ones.
The illustrations are enchanting and engaging! And you may recognize the artist from the beloved Easter book The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross.
