Description

"I am a recovering Compulsive Comparison Syndrome sufferer. It causes me to feel envy, despair, pride and superiority. It cuts away at my relationship with God, with my loved ones, and with myself. It has promised me contentment, and yet robbed me of it.
And although I don't know you at all, I'm fairly sure you have CCS, too. That's not meant to sound rude. It's just that I've rarely met a woman who doesn't struggle with it."

This book is about how to spot this syndrome and its effects in your life; the view of life that causes it; how the gospel treats it; and how you can move beyond it to live a life of true, lasting contentment.

Sophie's honesty made me swallow hard, not because of  what it told me about herself but what it revealed in me. Looking up and looking down at others is something we all do yet for many of us it's so habitual we hardly notice we're doing it. Unfortunately the consequences are far more evident. This book takes a good hard look at how we compare ourselves to others and the reasons why we do it. It's a problem we just can not afford to ignore! Sophie offers hope by presenting the God given remedy and convincing us that rather than being doomed to dissatisfaction, contentment is a realistic option.

Ann Benton

Author and conference speaker

We all know we do it and we think we know why. Sophie de Witt exposes the malignancy of the disease through a thorough, Biblical analysis of the problem, pointing out the paucity of standard solutions. If you ever thought that recollecting that ‘there are so many others worse off than yourself’ is any kind of a cure for self-pity, then read this book. It is a real page-turner – I could not wait to read about the treatment,  and was intrigued and encouraged to discover that there is such a thing as healthy comparison. A book to read, and read again.

“Relevant, challenging, readable”

This book dared to go where others have not. It spoke to something that's huge and yet is rarely spoken of. I didn't feel guilty, rather it pointed me in a new direction. Wish I'd read it when much younger and have already passed it on to a friend.

“Helpful, humbling & hopeful”

Having faults and flaws brought to your attention is rarely comfortable but Sophie de Witt manages to highlight a problem that's common to most, if not all of us, in a humble and loving way. Better still, she helps the reader understand the root of the problem and explains what to do about it, urging us to find our contentment in Jesus. Although aimed at female readers, I don't doubt many males would benefit from this book's message too. It's an easy read and if you're wondering whether it's worth buying, go ahead; I really don't think you'll regret it. I've found it a great resource for teenage girls too and fully expect to return to it again and again.

“Practical solutions to stop comparing”

Author Sophie is honest, humble and forthright as she shows how comparing herself to others has caused suffering in her own life. This book is easy to read, short enough to use for a teaching session of material, and really gets down to the raw facts of why we compare ourselves to others. Sophie then takes us through practical ways to stop the comparison competition and shows how we need to focus on God and use Him as our ultimate guide to how to act and who to be like. Every teenage girl should be gifted a copy of this by their youth group, it would truly help a whole generation of young women know how to serve their sisters in Christ.

“Great little book”

(Review written for 'Compared to her... (ebook)')

This book helps to reveal more of the depths of our hearts and uncover sinful habits and patterns that might go unnoticed for years otherwise. The way this book pointed us to the satisfaction Jesus brings was very refreshing and powerful. Great for a book club discussion - we organised one for women in our church and there were many helpful and honest discussions which came out of the book.

“Relevant for everyone!”

Great book, reading with our ladies group at church, enjoying discussing each chapter at a time each week and seeing more about why we compare ourselves to each other and resetting our thinking to be be most interested in what Jesus thinks of us not each other!

“So pass-on-able I have already done so twice!”

This book is excellent. It exhorts us to find our satisfaction, security and significance in Christ but in such a way that we first see how sin takes hold in this area and then see how the gospel offers freedom. The application is so specific that it's impossible to dodge!
